Samaritan Ministries is one of the largest non-insurance healthcare sharing ministries in the U.S., offering Christians a significantly cost-saving, federally acceptable alternative to soaring health insurance plans and costs. Members of Samaritan Ministries share the cost of healthcare among themselves and, as members of a non-insurance health care sharing ministry, are granted an exemption from the federal requirement to have insurance or pay a penalty-tax.
Christians helping Christians with healthcare and medical expenses. It’s as simple as that. The healthcare sharing work of Samaritan Ministries is rooted in the core Christian directive to “Bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2)
Unlike health insurance plans that require high monthly rates for individuals and families, Samaritan Ministries coordinates the sharing of members’ medical cost burdens with each other, and at a much, much lower monthly rate than any health insurance offers. As of April 2018, more than 250,000 Samaritan Ministries members shared more than $27 million per month in medical needs directly, one household to another, without using health insurance. It is a genuine community of Christians helping Christians.
It’s a very different approach from insurance and insurance companies.
With Samaritan Ministries, members form a community of believers who have come together as one Body in Biblical community to assist members in need. Members help bear one another’s medical burdens without the use of health insurance. In this way, individual believers are connected to the larger Body of Christ as they give and receive financial, emotional and spiritual support.
Health care sharing is a unique opportunity for members to be the hands and feet of Jesus.
Each Samaritan household commits to sending a set “share” amount each month. Using a direct sharing model, these shares are sent directly from one household to another, to the members who have a qualified “need.” Samaritan Ministries matches shares to needs, so that sharing is coordinated and enough shares go to each need based on the amount of the need.
Because members are lifting each other up in prayer in addition to sharing monetary gifts, they can minister to the whole need of the human person, including the physical, spiritual and financial aspects.
It’s truly a beautiful experience, as many members testify.
“God has been so good to us during my battle with cancer. Many of the members, in fact, most, sent very personal encouraging notes with their share. They don’t know me and we probably will never meet, but their family was praying for me … I knew I wasn’t alone in this. My family was thought of and prayed for all across the country. What an encouragement! It meant so much … Samaritan Ministries is truly a testimony of God’s love for His children.” –Vern and Delores Eliason, Fredonia, Wisconsin
Gathering the bills
When a member has been treated for an illness or injury, that member collects itemized bills from their doctor and submits them to Samaritan Ministries.
Processing the bills
Bills are reviewed to make sure they meet the Guidelines. Then other members are assigned to send their shares for the month to the member with the need.
Paying the bills
Members send their shares by the 15th of the month so the member with the medical need can pay his or her bills on time.
What if a member has more bills later?
Not all the bills come at once, and that’s OK! If more bills show up later, a member simply sends them to Samaritan Ministries and the process begins again!
The Samaritan Ministries community of believers from all over the globe share medical needs. Members are spread across the United States and Canada, and some are serving as missionaries in foreign countries. All members, regardless of where they reside, join together to help members in need.
